It’s 2022. Why are we still using the same old word processors like Microsoft Word?

- Quality
- Strategy
- Speed
- and Performance
Ultimately, these tools will help you close and manage more clients, jobs, and help you make more money as a writer.
Let’s jump in.
3 Types of Writing Assistant Software
In this post, we’re going to cover three different types of software that are essential for all writers.
- Writing assistant software: Software helps to maximize writing style and quality while minimizing errors.
- SEO, content intelligence, and keyword tools: for creating performance writing that gets visibility and clicks.
- AI writing assistants: That can write full paragraphs of content in the click of a buttons –– maximizing writing accuracy and speed.
For new writers, these tools are the gateway to producing outstanding performance writing, building your portfolio, launching your business, and closing paying clients as quickly as possible.
For experienced writers, these tools will help you increase your productivity, output, writing performance, and your hourly or project rate.
For both, it means writing more quality content, faster, and making more dollars in fewer hours.
Grammarly and Grammarly Premium
Grammarly is a writing assistant software that helps you write better by catching grammar and spelling mistakes, and suggesting corrections accordingly. It also offers a plagiarism checker and vocabulary builder. Grammarly is available as a free writing assistant tool and as a premium desktop or browser app as well.
The features of Grammarly include grammar and spelling checking, plagiarism detection, and vocabulary enhancement. I’ve been using Grammarly Premium for over a year and am so pleased with it that I can’t ever see myself stop using it.
Its features will check:
- Spelling checker
- Grammar checker
- Punctuation
- Readability and clarity suggestions
- Word and phrasing alternatives
The plagiarism scanner alone is worth the price, even though the actual value lies in the grammar and spelling detection and suggestion software.
Bottom line: If you can’t afford a have a human editor (who can these days?), you need to invest in a digital one. Grammarly premium will catch 99% of the mistakes that you miss.
ProWritingAid
ProWritingAid is a writing assistant software that helps you write better by catching grammar mistakes and suggesting corrections. Its features include
- Spelling check
- Grammar check
- Punctuation corrections
- Word explorer and Contextual Thesaurus
- Readability improvements and suggestions
ProWritingAid’s features are very similar to Grammarly’s. Some writers even report that Pro Writing aid is the more robust and less expensive version of Grammarly Premium.
Another reason I like ProWritingAid is because it offers a lifetime access price of $399. Plus, I’ve seen on Honey and some other writing sites that you can find regular 20% discounts on pricing.
Hemingway Editor
Hemingway Editor offers a free and inexpensive writing assistant software options that can instantaneously help any writer improve their writing.
Hemingway Editor helps you make your writing more powerful and clear by identifying adverbs, passive voice, and uninteresting, complicated words.
Hemingway Editor excels in helping you cut the dead weight from your writing. It uses a highlighting system to highlight your wordy sentences in yellow and very wordy sentences in red.
Hemingway Editor is similar to Grammarly and Pro Writing Aid, with some key differences.
Hemingway editor offers a “simplify language” function that attempts to make your writing more concise and readable. It also has a “Grade Level” feature which shows you how complex your sentence are on a scale of grade levels.
If you find that you’re a wordy writer or fall into passive voice regularly, I highly recommend Hemingway Editor. It’s available as a free online tool and as a paid desktop app for only $19.99 for lifetime access.
WordTune.com and WordTune Chrome Extension
WordTune is a writing assistant software that offers several different plans and a free Google Chrome extension.

- Keywords that get tons of searches vs. ones that don’t

These tools provide detailed feedback and intelligence on:

Getting Started
So you’ve got your list of the best writing assistant software. What’s Next?
Time to design your writer’s software stack.
The ideal writing assistant software stack includes one of each of this software we’ve discussed:
- Write Correctly and Minimize Errors: Grammarly, Hemingway, WordTune.
- Write More, Faster: Jasper, Copy.AI, PepperType, Rytr.
- Write Performance Content that Ranks: WriterZen, Outranking, NeuronWriter.
I can’t stress this enough: If you’re a new writer, start using these together as soon as possible.
These tools will give you the power to grow your writing business infinitely faster than if you were using no software and logging keystrokes on your own.
Invest in you and your business now.
Start making money sooner and faster.
How do I get started?
Here’s what I recommend:
- Test drive all of them: Signup for free or discounted trials of each one of these pieces of software. Test each out daily for at least 1-2 weeks for yourself or with your clients. See what you like best and what works/performs best for you, your clients, workflow, etc.
- Choose one of each: Choose the writing assistant software you like using that fits your style, goals, budget, and business best. Feel free to use multiple writing assistants like Grammarly’s free version + Hemingway Editor + WordTune’s Chrome extension.
- Start using them: Use these writing assistant tools every day, on every piece of content you write. This software will be a 5-10x multiplier for your productivity, results, and revenue potential.
- Track Your Results: Keep track of your results over time. How much faster are you writing? How many errors is your writing assistant helping you correct? Is your content ranking? How much traffic are your blogs, articles, and pages bringing in for you and your clients?
Note:Also, use Hemingway Editor and the WordTune extension –– regardless of the stack you choose –– because they’re free and incredible.
So what would some different software stack examples look like?
Here are a few example stacks at different price points:
- Bang for your Buck: Grammarly Free, Hemingway Editor, WordTune extension + the basic plan of NeuronWriter or WriterZen + Rytr, Copy.AI, or Peppertype’s basic plan.
- Better: Grammarly Premium or ProWritingAid + WriterZen Standard or NeuronWriter Silver + Jasper.AI Boss Mode (select the number of characters/words you need).
- Effective and Economic: Forego a pure AI writer like Jasper. Then, opt for either Grammarly Premium or ProWritingAid and use the SEO tools and AI writing features of Outranking.io, WriterZen, or NeuronWriter.
Most of the SEO and rank intelligence software I mentioned in this article have AI writing built into it. At the time I’m writing this, I’m not sure their quite up to the capabilities of the pure AI writing assistant software like Jasper, Copy.AI, Peppertype, Rytr, etc.
But, I think you could save yourself some dough and generate some great content by just choosing a writing assistant like Grammarly Premium and one of the combination software that includes rank intelligence and AI writing –– Outranking.IO, NeuronWriter, or WriterZen.
Again, the best way to find out what combination of what works best for you as a writer and your business is to test them out.
In Closing
There you have it! The full writing software stack that can help new writers launch their business in 1-2 weeks, and experienced writers catapult their business to new heights.
Also, post in the comments and tell us what software or stack you’re using. I’d love to use this post as an opportunity to learn and share with other writers on fun writing processes, templates, automation, etc. that work for you. One of the best aspects of paid writing and freelance is sharing recipes with other writers.
